How we started

It all started when…

Beljala Kennels was founded in 1980 when we started to show and breed Border Collies. We introduced Australian Kelpies to the kennels a year later.

In 1985 we purchased our first Schipperke from Bateauchien Kennels in Victoria. We continued to successfully show and breed these wonderful little dogs until approximately 2004, making up many homebred champions. Along the way our dogs were awarded numerous Best In Group, Runner Up Best In Group, Class In Group, and Class in Show awards. They achieved several Best Of Breeds at Sydney and Brisbane Royal Dog Shows and Best Exhibit In Show and Classes In Show at Schipperke Speciality Shows.

Many puppies were placed in wonderful pet homes and have become valued and much loved members of families.

Our last Schipperke, Sandy, my daughter’s and grandson’s beloved pet, crossed over the rainbow bridge in March 2019.

Due to increasing work demands, we took a hiatus from showing until after Alanna’s retirement at the end of 2013.

Deciding to re-enter the dog world, after researching different dog breeds, we came across the Havanese from a video clip on the Discovery Chanel - Dogs 101.

We recently found this YouTube clip, which has a lot of useful information about the breed too.

Havanese were not a known in Australia when we showed dogs previously, but we became intrigued by these little dogs and thought that the breed would suit us.

We purchased our first Havanese, Ted from Philip Williams of Hashki Havanese at the beginning of 2014 and commenced on our whirlwind ride.

As mentioned previously, our dogs are first and foremost our pets but showing is still a big part of our lives.

We started showing Ted’s litter sister, Bliss for Philip Williams and managed to get her Australian Champion title.

Over the years we have campaigned many Havanese for others, as well as ourselves, and have made up Championship, Grand Championship and Supreme Champion titles for the following dogs:

Australian Champion Hashki A Little Bit Of Heaven (Bliss) owned by Philip Williams

Australian Champion Hashki Reality Bites (Winnie) owned by Philip Williams

Australian Champion Auskrest Musical Nights (Ebony) - owned by Cris Henderson

Australian Champion Hashki Fall Of Rome (Roman) owned by Philip Williams

Australian Champion Hashki Xtraordinary Measures (Mia) owned by Philip Williams - Mia was awarded Best Of Breed at 2015 Sydney Royal Dog Show at only 10 months of age beating many top winning Havanese

Australian Champion Hashki Young Gun (Della) owned by James and Alanna Bell

Australian Champion Hashki Xpert Witness (Erin) owned by Philip Williams

Australian Champion Hashki Xception To The Rule (Rebel) - Rebel was awarded Best Puppy In Toy Group at 2017 Sydney Royal Dog Show - now owned by James and Alanna Bell

Grand Champion (now Supreme Champion) Hashki Just Go With It (JayJay) - Jay Jay came to live with us from 8 months of age to approximately 26 months, and gained his Grand Champion title whilst he was with us. He was later purchased from Philip Williams by Grahame Neave, and went on to be the top winning Havanese of all time in Australia. In early 2019 he travelled over to North America, recently becoming a Canadian Grand Champion. He is currently owned by David & Darlene Scheiris, Patricia Lucas, and Grahame Neave

Supreme Champion Hashki Zero The Hero (Hero) owned by James and Alanna Bell

We showed Philip William’s favourite stud dog, Hunter (Supreme Champion Auskrest Elusive Effect) to Best In Show and Runner Up Best In Show awards and achieved the last Best In Group award to make up his Supreme Champion title. Hunter was bred by Cris Henderson.

In 2018 we started breeding dogs under the Beljala prefix again.

Our first litter (the “A” litter) produced some wonderful puppies who have already proved themselves in the showring being awarded Class In Group and Class In Show awards:

Australian Champion Beljala A Last Tango In Paris (Paris) - owned by David Smith

Australian Champion Beljala Applause Please (Alexis) - owned by James and Alanna Bell

Beljala All Eyes On Me (CeeCee) - owned by Jennifer Nield

Our “B” litter also produced a lovely little dog with a bright future:

Australian Champion Beljala Bite My Dust (Morgan) - owned by Philip Williams and campaigned by Yvonne Barter. Morgan has already been awarded Runner Up Best In Group.

Most importantly, the majority of puppies we bred in 2018 have joined families as much loved fur children.
